Frequently Asked Questions on VR2 System
What is VR2 System?
2nd Stage Vapour Recovery (VR2) System is designed to reduce the amount of petrol vapour that escapes into the environment when a vehicle is being refuelled, by channelling it back into the underground storage tank. This System protects our environment by reducing the amount of petrol vapour released into the atmosphere.
How does the VR2 System benefit SPC customers?
The VR2 System channels most of the petrol vapour into the underground tank during refuelling (see diagram below). With less petrol vapour displaced into the atmosphere, the risk of flash fire is also reduced. This brings about not only a safer refuelling environment but also cleaner air for all customers at SPC service stations.
Why is SPC installing this VR2 System?
SPC believes in creating a safer and cleaner refuelling environment at SPC service stations. The VR2 System can be found in all SPC service stations across Singapore.
Will refuelling take longer with the VR2 System?
No, there will be no impact to refuelling time with the VR2 System in place.
Will SPC pass the cost of the VR2 System to our customers?
No, the cost of the VR2 System will not be passed to SPC’s customers.
Is VR2 System installed for diesel as well?
SPC has only installed the VR2 System for petrol because petrol releases more vapour during refuelling due to its more volatile nature.
Is SPC required by law to install this VR2 System?
No, there is no legal requirement to install VR2 System in service stations but SPC believes in doing our part to help create a safer and cleaner refuelling environment for our customers.
What do customers have to do to “activate” the VR2 System?
Nothing. No additional steps are required to be taken by customers during refuelling; they refuel their vehicles as normal.
Note: The pump nozzle has to be inserted into the fuel inlet with rubber cup resting on the fuel inlet fully for the VR2 System to work effectively. This will prevent the escape of petrol vapour from the vehicle’s tank into the atmosphere.
With the VR2 System, does it mean that customers are allowed to use their mobile phone or smoke in the forecourt?
No, the current prohibitions on use of mobile phones or smoking in the forecourt remain in place.
What happens to the petrol vapour which is recovered?
The recovered petrol vapour is channelled back into the underground storage tank (see diagram below).
Will there be any change to the quality or quantity of SPC petrol refuelled?
No, the VR2 System does not in any way affect the quality or the quantity of petrol refuelled into customers’ vehicles.
